Choose your Van

This is arguably the most important step to planning a van conversion. There are so many different types, sizes and models of vans out there so this is where you should take the time to really figure out what you need to suit your needs.

A few things we recommend to think about are; what’s your budget? How much space do you need? How many people are going to be living in the van?  From a Sprinter Race van to a VW Crafter each one has a different functionality so get researching.

Plan Your Layout

Planning your layout is the most exciting step. Again take your time with this and map out multiple blueprints to compare which plan might benefit you the most for your needs. It can be fun to start buying supplies and decorating items but don’t forget to consider practicality.

Storage will be a huge factor in your van conversion so make sure you include as much storage as possible in as many places as possible. Remember to keep the place liveable and comfortable too, instead of a solid table, try one that folds away or add storage to chairs to double up the use.

Keep an even weight distribution

When planning the layout, an important but often overlooked step is to ensure the weight distribution is even. Avoid placing all your heavy items on one side of the van and if you need to get some help from a professional to make sure everything is accurate we recommend doing so!

Consider multiple functions

As important as every step is, this one will be the step you thank us for most! When living from a van, which is more of a confined space than you may be used to, multi-function items will be a life saver. For example, having chairs that double up as storage, or a kitchen that can fold away can open up more space within the van.

Research

Once you have the basics down and planned you can begin to plan the intricate details such as plumbing and electrical work. If you are looking to do the full conversion yourself then be sure to know what you are doing before going head first into it all. This is another step where we would advise to get a professional in – or if you have any friends or family who would be willing to help now is the time to let them!

Even though we think every step is equally important, don’t forget to have fun more than anything. Planning and converting a van is an exciting time so embrace it all and be prepared to work hard!
